I wondered the same thing, Carol. Carol. I used to use Grubco but had teeny mealworms for awhile so switched. I’ve found that with buying 5,000 the price is really similar if not the same. I was surprised. And they aren’t so limited when they can send them. And you rack up points and get discounts occasionally.

And how about a photo of the baby. We might be able to tell if it is a cowbird.

Sassy, really consider looking into Rainbow Mealworms. I know they are far away at least they are for me but they get here quick and I’ve had a really good quality mealworms from them.

Welcome Matt. When those babies are 12 days old stop checking on them so they don’t fledge prematurely. Hey..you said that your box is on your deck. If that means it’s attached to your deck please consider moving it after these fledge. Raccoons, squirrels, snakes will raid the box and make a meal out of babies and eggs. It should be on slick metal pole with a baffle.
Let us know when those babies fledge. If you count up the days you may be able to see them do it!

Not too much longer for those babies! I have my third nest with eggs. I’m assuming it’s from my main pair but it’s odd because she has a baby in another nest that isn’t quite ready to fledge. I’ve never had that happen.
And my other pair in the back is starting on a second nest. I’m assuming it’s the same pair but they are using a different box that had tree swallows in it previously. The box that those bluebirds previously used Now have new tree swallow eggs which is kind of late for tree swallows!! A lot of my tree swallows have already left. It is getting so confusing!

I have never ever heard of a wren pecking an almost ready to fledge baby bird to death. I think they are only a danger to eggs and up to five day old nestlings. From what I’ve heard from people that have issues is …they don’t even peck the nestlings to death…they just remove them from the nest. Gin…what is your opinion?

But Gin, I think Maybelle’s saying that the attacks happened when the nestling were close to fledging. So, that wouldn’t be wrens, correct?

So wrens don’t always start putting sticks in right away? I guess I just assumed that they did that because they make so many dummy nests. That shows that it isn’t all about the nest. It’s just plain territorial.

Strange. Hope they hatch. It’s been a weird season for me too. I had 3 new eggs recently and only one hatched. This might be my only time to have 3 eggs and it IS my only time that only one baby hatched!!

Wren’s are sneaky so I doubt you will see them. But if they destroy eggs they usually start putting sticks in soon after. (Some one correct me if that is wrong) House sparrows will sit on top and chirp and poop on the roof of your nestbox. Did you see wounds on your dead birds? Wrens don’t attack older babies…I’d say 5 days and older. I don’t have many wrens but I’m dealing with them with my friends boxes. I don’t think that they normally peck the chicks to death. Usually they only take tiny babies out and pierce eggs. Are you sure it isn’t house sparrows?
