The nests are usually flat and compact after fledge though, right?
I have tons of bluejays and no problems from them. Sialis does say they can be predators, though. I keep my seed feeders in the front and just the blues in the back but they jays and cardinals still cruise through once in a while with no issues so far…
I would leave the umbrella. Just to be humane for poor mama!
That is so perfect, Maybelle! I need a print that says that!
I think you will be fine moving the box with the egg in it. The predators always come back.
Last year the rat snake that ate 5 babies ready to fledge had the nerve to come back to the empty birdhouse the very next day in broad daylight “just in case.”
Much to his regret.I was sure it would be today because mom and dad didn’t take the mealworms to the box in the brief 15 mins I had to watch this morning. But when I walked up to the box tonight they bombed me badly. So I am assuming they are still in there and it’s too late to peek. Praying that they are OK!!!
I’ve been sitting outside this evening and watched the parents go in and feed them at least 20 times. So I can’t imagine a fledge tomorrow!
The rule of thumb for mine seems to be two successful broods. When one fails they go for a third.
And you really don’t want to encourage another attempt this late. Another good reason to just let them be….I’m leaving my box open after this fledge. They should be long gone by now. It’s too hot…
What do you mean by cleaned out? Like, the nest gone?
It’s so scary for the dogs. I hate it! And they will keep it up for days around here!
Miscalculated. One is 17 days today and the other 2 are 16 days. Firecrackers going off all over and mom still taking mealworms in. I am relieved!!!
I have rat snakes so I have the Krueger guard up. I bought a big metal raccoon guard but I’m afraid the rat snakes which are about 5 feet long would use it as a ledge to climb over the Krueger. All we can do is our best. These rat snakes can definitely climb the baffle. So next year I plan on a stovepipe with the Krueger on top. My POA will love it!!
Must say the metal pole with Krueger have been awesome for snakes. Then I got HOWR>
It’s always something!!!
At least I fledged 5 with hopefully 3 more in the next day or so…Never had 6 but I’m in very far south so nests here are smaller.
Thanks to Gin for the shoebox idea. Everyone has one and it worked perfectly…Praying for your sweet mama blue. Been thinking a lot about her and if you took down the umbrella she probably still wouldn’t give up and would be even hotter. Sad all around :(
