Awww! Pictures! Congrats!
It probably was Gin’s and it worked like a charm!!!
Plus my blues learned to chase off the wrens. Not sure which was the trick but last nesting went fine and these are 14 days old and too bug for wren attacks, now I’m obsessed about snakes, raccoons, and cats.
I used a shoebox to block the sides in a nest that had already been attacked by wrens and it worked great. YMMV.
I just feel for that poor mama. But you’ve truly done all you can. And you really can’t take her eggs away as much as we know they won’t make it. Our Blues are strong and persistent!
It’s upper 80’s here and really humid but praying my 14 day olds make it!Gin, I have tons of grey squirrels and never have a problem with them? Do others?
I’m not even sure what a Noel guard would protect against with the tons of predators I deal with. I know they market them heavily on the bird websites but just wont do against the losses I’ve had so far…snakes and house wrens. And though not yet I have a Rocky Raccoon who has moved in. Trying to keep his belly full in the front yard and greased the metal pole to bits. 3 more days til fledge. But they are really scary days as far as snakes because they go by smell. I’m afraid a raccoon guard would help the snakes bypass the Krueger trap.
AWWWWW!!! I love the happy stories!
I’ve never seen it but I understand the feelings. Every year I have had some kind of heartache which really gets to me….but when I see those sweet things in February I just melt. I keep getting better and better at protecting them but I have no idea how to protect them from other blues.
I get really depressed when something happens to my babies. It’s unproprtional to the situation usually.
I know Ive posted this before but when my neighbor 2 doors down came over to thank me for the beautiful babies that took up in his yard it eased the pain of the first nesting loss.I know Tammy! I guess they are done nesting.yay!
That is just so sad. I wish I knew the answer but I would leave the umbrella to give mom some protection until she gives up.
Next year I’m doing a wobbling stovepipe.
I you have snakes at all or raccoons a fence post won’t really do. Or cats.
It’s worth every penny to invest in a good metal pole. That way you can attach the proper guards. I have a new resident raccoon and if I had the right guard for raccoons I’m afraid it would help a snake bypass my Krueger guard.I’m on my third but first didn’t survive, sadly.
Unfortunately looking at July 3-4 fledge and I pray all of the firecrackers don’t disorient or upset them…
