Later broods are smaller in the south. No worries…
It’s the neighborhood web site!!! We live in a golf course community and they can be real buttheads in the POA! A bunch of old retired golfers….
Awesome!!!!
Lord yes, Tammy!!! They decided that the idiots of the architectural committee had to approve all birdhouses! I threatened them with the Migratory Bird Treaty and had all kinds of people wanting to contribute to my defense fund.
They backed off really quickly.
They stated that they wanted to be sure there were no “tacky or multifamily” bird houses up.
I wish you could see how tacky mine is with Kreuger guard, wren guard, and sparrow spooker. And now heat shield!
I was really touched at the number of people who came to my defense on the Nextdoor.com site.
It’s a lot of work and everyone seems to enjoy seeing the bluebirds in the neighborhood!Lots of good heat shield ideas on Sialis.org. Mainly from our Texas friends!
Mine are doing it too in southern Alabama. We are not as hot as you yet. I put up a styrofoam heat shield today as it got 91. For mine, it seems as if they keep trying after a nest failure. Their first nest was attacked and the remaining died. Second nest fledged 5. I’m expecting hatch of this last batch any minute.
I never had this behavior until last year. Usually they start here in February and are long gone by now. Last year I had June babies and was worried to death.
This year is even later. I figure July 5th before fledge. It will be way hot then. I put on a makeshift heat shield today out of styrofoam raised up from the lid. It worked last year. I’ve heard of people doing umbrellas but we have a ton of snakes and I would hate to try that.
Keep me posted!Never mind that idea Carol, now fire ants have built a mound close to the turtle nest. Ha!
It’s the most stressful “relaxing” hobby I have ever had!!! I have a turtle nest in my yard and it’s way less stressful. 70 day incubation and no monitoring since they are underground :)
Awesome!!!
Very smart to move the box. I would remove the nest. The snake that got mine last year was about 5 feet long so a cone would have been useless. mine were 2 days from fledge. I was devastated. Parents did the same thing, looking in and out for a few days. They renested successfully after that awful loss.Snake actually had the nerve to come back the very next day and was all wrapped around the birdhouse….
Praying it all works out!
What a great group here. I have no idea but it’s heartwarming to see everyone chime in.
My female started her nest within a week of fledge. Dad took over all parental responsibilities early on.
Exactly how mine are. Neighbor two doors down told me they moved to his yard. At one month finally taking some of their own mealworms. They are little brats, I tell you!
P.S I don’t have raccoons so not sure but I would imagine the nest would be torn up.
