I feel sure snake. Look at Kruger guards on Sialis if you are in snake country. Learned the hard way. Easy to make and I have never caught a snake since putting it up. Maybe they are wise to it.
Could also be house wrens. Lost my first nest to them this year. A cut off end of a shoebox cured that.
It seems like I am constantly learning but always through tragedies like yours. I know it’s heartbreaking. Been there.Sorry!
Cone baffle won’t stop a snake or house wren. I finally had to get really serious and now my BB house looks like the city dump. But it works. There is a really good section on Sialis on this topic. But hopefully that little one will stay put until it’s time!!
Good job on saving the baby!
Thanks Gin! Since I live in pine straw hell I’ve never dreamed of saving one of those old dirty nests. So I feel glad I haven’t!
I’m going to look for those! I pray HOWR hate them! I love the neighborhood bluebird involvement. I got a neighbor excited about it yesterday since my babies moved to his yard!
If my calculations are right in South Alabama mine should hatch Thursday. So far we are in in the 80’s but calculating fledge will be close to July. I’m going to have to rig up heat shields on top of wren guard, sparrow spooker, and snake guard. My poor box is gonna be the tackiest one ever.
I have the styrofoam ready to deploy.
My neighbors may have me committed!Interesting Gin! I’ve never saved a nest because I have a billion pieces of pine straw at all times but what is the reason not to reuse?
I finally saw a chickadee this week! They’ve been super scarce!
Gin, speaking of not caring about the HOA! I just met the nicest young guy who lives two doors down outside of my back golf course fence. He noticed my birdhouse and told me he was so thrilled because he sees the babies in his yard every day and had never seen bluebirds before. I apologized for the crazy look of the house and he told me how much pleasure he and his kids were getting from seeing all the blues.
So take that HOA! It warmed my heart to help those birds into the world!Congrats! The world has 4 more beauties now!!!
Despite what I have read mine have nested again after predation but I have always changed the box location until this year. Mine nested in the same box after probable HOWR attack. They had a successful second nest and are on their 3rd. Now with wren guard, sparrow spooker, and Krueger snake trap. And one angry HOA. LOL.
How WONDERFUL!!!! Tears of joy!!!! That is better than any possible outcome I could have imagined…
To me this is harder and sadder than any situation I have dealt with. I hope someone with experience can chime in…
I wonder if it would be allowed to keep them as pets in a cage and fed? If you were so inclined. I just don’t know. But that’s what I would probably end up doing, though not legal.
Oh my gosh! I am so sorry!!!I have never heard of this. Do you have a wildlife rehabber near you? I would think that they should be euthanized by a veterinarian to avoid any suffering. This is so sad :(
