Three always seems to be the magic number that they try for down here in Lower Alabama.
Randy, I bet you will! Since I lost my first nesting I am thrilled to be on round two. It will be way too hot for a third try. Probably iffy for this second try.
This Mom is funny. She lays around noon. Not typical but I’m sure she’s incubating 4 now. Giving her some peace from my daily paranoid monitoring!
Thanks Gin! My first wren guard was great but cleaning lady tossed it. This one is a little less sturdy but holding on despite the rain.
I really don’t want to use my expensive shoe boxes even though I can’t wear the dumb shoes after breaking my foot in 9 places! Vanity!Gorgeous!
Got 4 this time around. My poor box looks crazier and crazier and HOA is on my trail. Praying I can avoid heat shield until wren guard comes off but doubt it!
Wren. No doubt. I’m so sad to read this!
Another egg today so wren guard worked, Only problem is that it’s pouring rain and a flimsy shoebox so will have to replace ASAP/ I think she is brooding now so I guess early evening would be the best time….Thoughts?
I wonder if that was part of my problem last time Carol. I know I had HOWR take eggs but the two survivors died about a week later with bloated bellies. Maybe I should wait a few days after this new batch hatches before feeding mealworms?
Fourth egg today! Guard accepted. Unfortunately flushed mom even though it was noontime so I assume she is incubating.
My only other thought is that there is so much wren territory here, as in huge bushes, that they may be satisfied and busy with their own nests. I was just sitting quietly on my screened in patio the other day that has a large Camellia bush in it and the wrens came in to check it out. So quite nervous. Though I have a Yorkie that would make a quick snack of a wren if it was trapped in the screened porch.
I have never ever had sticks so I may be wrong about wrens. I had missing eggs and babies and have never seen a HOSP. I don’t have a raccoon. Have plenty of snakes but none have even attempted the kreuger guard. And wrens are everywhere. So I feel sure that they are the culprits.
Tamsea, my second brood did fine after losing the first to wrens. But my idea of putting the guard up before and egg was an epic fail. Took it off and have 3 bluebird eggs 36 hours later. Guard is back up and I saw mom go in today. Will keep you posted as I am an obsessive monitor!!!
I really wouldn’t do a thing with 80’s temps.
It’s been 80’s here for months. It’s the Texas people who get thee 100’s who have problems. Nicole and I both had great luck last year with late nestings with placing a styrofoam roof up with pins. I will be facing the same scenario with my latest batch. I found a 1.99 styrofoam cooler lid at Walgreen’s last year that did fine. I moved my box to shade and then realized I have too many snakes next to my shady pond and put it back in full sun.
