Double prayers for your babies Nicole! I had never seen a HOWR until today! They are so plain….totally never even noticed them!
I’ve got 5 incubating now, too. Praying they have success this time!
Even though it’s possibly not the ideal time, I’d get that guard up ASAP. I’m like you, not sure if mine will work since I think I lost some of their first nest to wrens. But so far so good.
You are going to have to do it on a day when you can make sure mom still goes in and out afterwards, though.I have a huge Old English Sheepdog and a happy Yorkie and the blues aren’t bothered by them at all! Dad doesn’t even bomb them like he does the squirrels…
My nests are always a pretty even cup of almost pure pine straw. Would love to see a pic of the nests you are seeing also.
My pair’s current nest (second try after a loss of all babies) is so skimpy I thought it wasn’t close to finished.I can’t believe I missed that memo! I thought I had that site memorized! There are tons of natural bugs here as it is in south Alabama LOL.
I am so sad Nicole! I have my little homemade wren guard up but I’m nervous because it they have indeed raided this box before I’m sure they remember it. I’ve never seen a HOWR or a HOSP in my yard but it had to be one of them, I’m convinced.
Why are the birds so mean this year?
And yes, a snake would never leave without taking every baby.I’m lucky enough to live on a golf course which they love. But like Nicole, I have my box close to a big shrub so they have a place to fledge to safely.
For years I had a box about 5 feet from my front porch….I feel better at night too! Thankfully my new job doesn’t have a set start time but if I am lazy I end up working so late. It’s a vicious cycle1
You’re the best!!! You saved me last year when I was so devastated about those babies!
It’s unreal how upset I get when something goes wrong. I promise to take up crochet or something next year!!!I’m so sorry Mel! I lost my first bluebird nest this year and still am not sure why. Last year it was snakes, now I believe birds. They keep trying though, so I realize I just have to do the best I can and learn as I go. I just hate how sad I get with the losses.
My third nesting last year made it all worthwhile when they successfully flew!Scot, this was my first sparrow spooker use too. Put it up after egg one and have a new one every day. Heck, it even looks scary to me! The HOA is gonna have a field day.
But yes, take it down after fledge so the sparrows don’t get used to it.
I can’t imagine who invented this crazy thing and how it works???Nicole, I did the most basic thing ever but so far so good. I couldn’t find anything commercially available so cut a shoe box end off and tacked it onto the sloping roof. So far so good. I’m sure I could have done something less unattractive but I’ve been super pinched for time and I could do it in the dark. It obscures the hole but mom flies in and out easily. I’m afraid if I do have wrens they already know what’s in there so fingers crossed!
Wow! I have been WAY over feeding! Thanks for the useful info!
Congrats on the egg! I posted on the other thread that I just knew it would be soon!
