I wonder what’s going on Gin? I never have more than one pair but always have one. I just hate that mine leave and I never see them from May-June to Feb and my Birmingham friend gets to see hers year round. Guess it’s just too hot down here in lower Alabama.
Oh my gosh Linda, that is amazing!!!
I am Lisa in Fairhope AL. Guess I got lucky for years because I had a box hanging from a chain right in front of my front porch and had two broods a year for at least 8 years with no problems.
Then last year, horror of horrors, in broad daylight I found a five foot snake going into the box full of eggs. I pulled him out but there were only 2 eggs left and mom and dad moved on.
I put a box in my backyard on a pole (still clueless) and lost a whole nest right before fledge from another gigantic snake. I knew because he came back the next day.
So I went nuts and learned all I could about Krueger guards and finally fledged four.
Never have had HOSP luckily.
This year I learned the bad way about HOWR and lost 3 and the 2nd two died in the nest of unclear reasons.
Removed the nest and I am sparrow spooked, wren guarded, and Krueger trapped and praying to hatch five on Thursday. I have memorized the entire Sialis site and spend too much time preaching about BB boxes on trees.”
Thanks for all of the advice and fellowship!
LisaDon’t you just hate having to leave down when the blues are nesting? I totally wasn’t thinking when I planned vacation next week. Hopefully all will go well and they will enjoy the break from my constant harassment.
And I taught my very reluctant housekeeper how to do the mealworms. LOL.Nicole, God was watching over those two! May they gave wonderful lives! Praying for their safe fledging!
Mine too David. All looking good so far. Fingers crossed!
Just a sad situation all around. I’ve never lost a parent before, and I thought I’d been through it all. They never give up though.
I would remove the nest too actually. It’s so hard when we do everything right and something goes wrong :(
Some may disagree but I would remove as sad as it is. This will give you the best chance at a new nesting this season. I am devastated for you. Prayers. Xoxo.
Thrashers LOVE mealworms and wait forever for mine to crawl out of the cage feeder!
No clue but that is horrible!!!
I would first suspect snake, depending on where you are located. Mine never went back to a box after a snake attack. I had to get very aggressive with snake protection last year. And finally fledged four.
This year I suspect HOWR.
Feels like it’s always something.
But, bless their hearts, they keep trying. Keep us posted!I think you should be fine if you took the wasp nest down. I feel like they will be back! I would leave the nest until you’re sure they’ve moved on.
I wouldn’t know what to do without my blues. I need to downsize but it has to be to a place with good BB potential!
I’m so sorry! This can be such a heartache sometimes :(
All 5 looked fine yesterday… Still nerves! You should be out of the woods for wrens now…thank God!
