That is kind of quick for the second nest but they are preparing for the next clutch of eggs. Good luck Dana

Stafford, VAThanks Carol and Randy. I have a “Wildbirds Store” narby and I am going to look for the feeder next week. If they do not carry the cage feeder I will order I as I do have robins and bluejays galore.
David
Stafford, VAI haven’t been able to use Photobucket since it started charging for the premium service. I use “imgur” now.
David
Stafford, VACongratulations on the fledge Dana. You can look forward to another couple of nestings if the weather lets up a bit.
David
Stafford, VACarol – similar situation here. Left for a few days and came back to a nest. I guess the birds don’t like us watching them so close. They have their own time to do things. When are yours due to hatch?
David
Stafford, VAAnd now there are 5. The last one hatched this morning. I didn’t take the photo until this afternoon. I expect them to fledge May 27-28. I will post a couple of photos as they grow.

Stafford, VAThis year has been very erratic for the bluebirds in the mid-Atlantic states. The cool weather may have upset them and they might have moved to a warmer nesting area. Mine were late this season also. Be patient. they might just be out house hunting again as the weather warms.
David
Stafford, VAAnd then there were 4!!! One more picking at the shell.

Stafford, VAGood suggestions Tammy. Our temperatures are not as severe as Texas but it is getting warmer. I have added a foam sheet with 3/8″ spacers to the south facing side of my nestbox and will be adding a piece of T-111 siding cut to about 11″ x 12″ over the top of the box after all of the eggs hatch. It does keep the box cooler but I have never measured how much.
David
Stafford, VAVery nice. Congratulations. 3 of my 5 eggs just hatched today (another thread). I am waiting for the other 2 also.
Enjoy all of the activity, Dene.David

Stafford, VA8 eggs is a LOT for blues. Is there no way to put up a permanent sun shade over the nestbox?
David
Stafford, VATaking a small amount of the nest from the bottom should not be a problem as long as you do not open the cup. Leave enough to cushion the eggs. Happy for you. A second thought – I haven’t tried this but it may be possible to “snip” some of the nest from the top to lower it. I think that I would do it on the front and sides of the nest and leave the back untouched. The female then can reshape as necessary.

Stafford, VANo Gin, I haven’t yet. The only instance of HOWR interference I have dealt with I posted in another thread where wrens tried to build a nest over bb eggs that they had punctured I took the box down to clean out the egg mess and put the box back up – but they never returned. Effective, but I don’t think that I should have interfered with the nest. It has not happened again. I believe some of that may be due to some clearing of the brush and shrubs that used to be in the wooded area behind the bb nest box. I have been clearing that area for about 2 years and pushing the undergrowth further away from the bluebird nestbox.
DavidDavid
Stafford, VAI have had a HOWR start build over a bluebird nest where they destroyed the eggs. Happened only once. took the box down to clean out the messy eggs but they never came back. Probably should have left the nestbox alone until they had their young.
DavidDavid
Stafford, VAI am with Tammy and Carol on this. Removing the box just keeps them away until you put the box up again. Using it to force the “bond” and then eliminating the user makes it a valuable tool instead of an unused resource. Good luck in the coming days.
