Another egg today – but even better 3 of the first brood showed up with parents for a while. They spooked before I could get the camera out the door for a pic. I put up a second shepherd’s hook so the whole family can rest in the sun (if there is sun).

Stafford, VAIt sounds like it is going to be a good season for the blues.
David
Stafford, VAGot out to the nestbox an hour ago and found the first egg of the second brood. More to come.

David
Stafford, VAHappy for you Carol. It is raining again today so I haven’t been out to check on the nest. Will post something later today if the rain ever stops.
David
Stafford, VASorry for the missing bluebirds. There is no telling why they have not returned. But it sounds like you still have some interesting birds in your area. How close are these houses to the bluebird nestbox?
David
Stafford, VASecond nest seems to be built and the pair are flying back and forth to the nestbox but no eggs yet. I saw them today with several of their first fledges sitting on the shepherd’s hook. They appeared to be feeding the young ones. It was good to see the new birds but I didn’t have my camera while mowing the lawn. I just might have to mount a camera on the tractor so I can use it while I work outside.

Stafford, VAGreat news Connie. I hope your second nestbox gets used. I did check the box ths afternoon and there is nesting material being “installed”. Not enough for the cup but it is beginning to form.
David
Stafford, VAGood for you Connie. Patience is the watchword with blues. That and vigilance for trouble (HOSP, HOWR, critters, etc.) Have a good day.
David
Stafford, VAI did see the photos. It came up as a “Photobucket” tab. Nice to see the young ones. I hpe that you can keep the heat down on the box. Keep us posted on your progress.
David
Stafford, VAThe heavy weather can do that. It has happened here also. They work like crazy on the nest and then a storm comes through and they disappear for a few days. Mine have generally returned within a week if the weather lightens up. Keep a positive attitude. If they have that nest there is a good chance that they will use it.

Stafford, VAWell I was way off with the timing on the fledge of my 5 young ones. They must have fledged on Friday or Saturday (day 15 following the hatch), when there was a lot of activity with mom and dad bird in and out of the nest box. I watched on Sunday and Monday and never saw either of the birds but yesterday (Tuesday) both looked into the nestbox , then flew away. I checked the box and it empty. It is cleaned up and ready for the next brood. I am assuming that they will return an a week or so to begin the second nest.

Stafford, VA3″ from the door is what I use also.
David
Stafford, VAHave they started to build a nest? If so they might not mind the wren guard. I have never put up a guard before the eggs were laid but if the bluebirds tolerate it during the nest-building stage you are way ahead of that HOWR.
