Hi Carol:
I certainly didn’t expect those mealworms to eat so much, but carrots are easy to come by. Did they come in wheat bran as a bedding or is that something you had to buy separately.
New at this part, last year I only bought the small pkgs. from Walmart.
I think I read somewhere that cornmeal works too, but then I might have made that up. LOL
Connie (PA)I agree, I would have done the same thing, returned it to the box. Don’t know if it happened but I suppose it is possible it was looking out and maybe another fledgling pushed it out. I too think tomorrow it will take wing on it’s own.
Good job on saving it.
Connie (PA)I was so saddened to read your news but feel so much better now that I know they will survive and be taken care of and will be a teaching tool for maybe some future BB lovers.
So sorry to hear about your BB’s, I do hope Papa finds a new mate soon.
We just came back from a few days at our cabin and Papa was sitting on the wire keeping an eye on things. He does seem very attentive to Mama and the 4 eggs she is incubating. I went out and put some dried mealworms and live ones in the feeder and I watched while Papa came down and ate. I saw Mama fly into the box so all is well. I thought about them the whole time we were gone, was so happy to see all was OK when we got here. It is raining off and on here in Western PA so I will not open the box while it is wet to check things out. I am becoming a paranoid BB landlady.
Connie (PA)Oh goodness Randy, that is so funny. They say a watch pot never boils and I guess a watch BB house never fledges.
Keep us informed.
Connie (PA)
That is so upsetting to think about. I hope you do not run into any problems. I have 5 boxes total, 2 of which are bluebird houses and the others just home made nest boxes but not a big enough opening for a BB. I have chickadees in one, the other 3 are empty but I keep an eye on them for any kind of activity.
Connie (PA)Hi Carol:
Well since that first experience of scaring her off I happily have not had that happen again. But I have not been checking till after lunch. Today there are 4 eggs and she is not incubating them, so maybe I will luck out with 5 or more this year or maybe she is waiting for a better time. Time will tell.
Connie (PA)The excitement builds, egg #3 today. Am anxiously waiting to see how many babies they will be taking care of. Last year there were 4, maybe this one will lay 5. Time will tell. Can you tell I am a happy landlady?

Hi Carol:
I never tried whistling but I have tapped gently on the box. I just took it for granted she was not in there, but I won’t make that mistake again, but if she is laying an egg at that time, it may be lost even with the tapping. That is what I am trying to avoid at this point.
Connie (PA)Hi Lisa:
I did that last year too, but I have been trying to refrain from that if possible, because if she is laying eggs she may lose one on the flight out or while out. Trying to avoid that if possible. Sometimes we cannot avoid that happening.
Connie (PA)That is great news Carol, Mama and Papa will be busy now. I do hope that Wren is gone for good. They are beautiful little song birds but I never knew they were so vicious. I have been learning a lot since I stated with the first BB’s last year.
Connie (PA)Sounds like you are on the right track with Mom and Dad checking things out. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Connie (PA)Happy to report 2 eggs in the nest this AM, but sorry to say I scared Mama out of the box. I will make sure not to check it till after lunch or later in the evening from now on. I do believe she started with the first egg yesterday and one more today.

Hi Gin:
I have to agree, they do know what they are doing. The nest looked as dry as a bone and so beautifully done. This morning around 8:00 AM I saw both mama and papa come swooping down out of the oaks, she landed on the house and he on the arbor. After a few minutes she went inside and he sat and did some wing flaps then took off for the oaks again and she remained in the box. I am thinking it is egg laying time.
I will check later if the weather is dry.
Connie (PA)Hi Randy:
I am glad to hear with all the inclement weather you have been having your blues are ready to fledge. You are a ways ahead of me. I will not check the box if it is raining tomorrow but if the afternoon is nice I will have to see if the first egg is there. Then it is a matter of wait and see and keeping my fingers crossed.
I hope if this laying, hatching and fledging is successful, there will be enough time left for a second one. Last year Mama disappeared and there was no second go round.
Will be thinking of you and wishing you luck also, and I will be looking forward to a following up report on your babies.
