If you are stuck with the 4×4 post you could still do a Krueger guard. They are cheap and easy to make. Like an upside down umbrella with layers of garden mesh.
Mine nested successfully after a probable wren attack. I used a half shoebox to make a wren guard and it worked so far. Today they are 7 days so it’s coming off.
Awwww!
So I figured it out…. dad gets a mouthful…meets mom in the tree…she takes them in. Good thing I’m on vacation tomorrow so i can stop obsessing1
Thanks David! It was about 10 when I was out there. It’s plenty warm here so I’m not surprised she’s out. Fecal sac removed so I will relax and enjoy now!
Thanks Carol! I am ashamed to admit I peeked twice and the first time there was a fecal sac and now it’s gone so I feel better. Papa is standing on a fence with a mealworms waving so he is trying to help.
Relief! Just an accidental drop! All 5 made it out safely….
Now I’m freaking out because I’ve been outside a half hour and no feeding action, Hmmmmm I hope it’s not the wren guard.
LOL as soon as I finished typing that saw mama fly out. Whew! I’m way too nervous for this hobby ;)Amazing photos by the way!!!!
I am jealous!I thought today was hatch day but I checked this morning and saw one egg which almost looked like a peck and not a pip. I didn’t get home til 10 PM but went out to make sure my wren guard was all good and intact and found a perfect half bluebird eggshell in the grass.
I won’t look tonight as badly as it’s killing me but it would be very unusual for mom to leave the half shell so close to the nest box. I am so nervous to look in the box tomorrow. I will either have happy nestlings or another broken heart.Beautiful home and property Brad!
Gin, I totally get it. I swear I am taking up a new hobby next year. This one leaves me too stressed out. Seriously. It’s great when things go well but the past two years have been one heartache after another. Even doing every thing I can. We just have so many darn predators.
I am so happy for you and your papa blue. I saw a hawk yesterday and fear struck me so hard, Hadn’t thought of them as a threat. It’s a miracle any survive with all the danger out there!
It seems ideal here! Bugs all year round! LOL. No snow, no ice. Oh well. I literally always have leftover mealworms and no takers every year…
Our bored idiotic HOA sent a memo saying all bird houses had to be pre-approved by the architectural committee. I let them have it! Citing the Migratory Bird treaty and all that. I had people come out in droves offering to support me, even financially, even I needed to fight for the Blues. Apparently lots of us golf course folks love our blues!
Haven’t heard another peep from those idiots.Usually I wouldn’t worry but it’s a whole week with hopefully 5 newborns to feed! I’m sure they would be fine without me.
Now I have to figure out when to get her to remove the wren guard. Hopefully hatching tomorrow so I can time it right.
I got home tonight and my makeshift wren guard had fallen off and I scared mom to death trying to reattach as quietly as possible. Poor thing! I hated to fix it at night but I was terrified of an early morning wren attack.
I’ve read 5-7 days after hatching to take down the guard. When does everyone take theirs down?
Next nesting I will be prepared with something much better than my thrown together shoebox guard!I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! I spend half my paycheck on mealworms LOL! I willl try the suet this year but I guess they’ve all gone to Louisiana!
