Take care of that ankle Lisa. The birds will be okay. Our temps are going the other way. They are calling for 9 or 10 days in the 90’s with little chance of rain to cool things down. This batch should fledge on July 14 the day we head off for a week in Michigan visiting lighthouses and attending a Handbell Directors Seminar in Grand Rapids. I hope they go early so I can clean out the box before we leave.

Stafford, VAHi Carol. That set-up is almost like mine. I like your foam idea and might do a “Sandwich” of wood and foam for my next shield. Since this is now going to be a permanent set-up, I am thinking about drilling vent holes in the roof of the nestbox also since there will be space between the roof and the “sandwich”
From the looks of your pole location, your only other option might be a large “Market Umbrella” for heat relief. :)David
Stafford, VAUnless you actually see the wrens going in and out of the box, I don’t think you can say “positively” that it was a wren strike. However, if you have protective predator barriers on the pole, no house sparrows in the vicinity, and the wrens are around, then it is a pretty good indicator. Check out “sialis.org” for more information on the wrens.

Stafford, VAHave you put anything over the top of the nestbox as a shield from the sun? I put a thin piece of plywood over my nestbox and the birds do not mind it at all and it has kept the box a little cooler although I have not done a study on the temperatures. Anything that keeps the direct rays of the sun off the box will help. I intend to use a bigger piece of wood for the next brood if they start one in late July.
Good luck with your blues.

Stafford, VAIt sounds like it is busy around your place. It is so much fun to watch the young bbs at the feeder. Get a photo if you can.
David
Stafford, VADidn’t get the photo. Can you use “imgur”? It is very easy to upload your photos and to copy the link that you would past in your post.
Edit – okay I did a “right click” on the broken image icon and selected “open in new tab” and the photo came up. The eggs are a nice light pink. I have never seen these in the years that I have been into Bluebirds. Looking forward to the full brood and hatchlings.Second edit – decided to get the photo up so everyone could see it. Saved in to my “imgur” photos.

David
Stafford, VAHappy third watch. When do you expect the hatch? Jul 6-7?
David
Stafford, VAGlad for you.
David
Stafford, VAThere is plenty of time for a second nesting.
David
Stafford, VAWell, it has been 3 days since the female bb laid the 4th egg. Just checked the box and there is no 5th egg. She has been in the box almost all day so I am presuming the start of incubation. I am looking forward to these 4 hatching around June 28-29.

Stafford, VALisa, I believe that it was said once before that the “bluebirds never seem to follow the rules.”

Stafford, VAEvie,

David
Stafford, VAI would clean out the box after the fledge to see if a BB pair might relocate or possibly a newly matched pair that may be looking. It can’t hurt, and if no bb’s show up the swallows might rebuild again.
David
Stafford, VAThird egg – and the 3 young from the first group are still around. Saw one fly to the ground as if it were trying to feed on a bug or larva of some sort. Also just noticed that I deleted a photo from my imgur album that was posted above.
Tammy – any way to insert another photo there?
