Wow Randy, some picture of the deer. They did a clear cut job on me at the beginning of winter, but now they just seem to mosey through.
Glad to hear your BB pair has returned, and hope they win out over the others for their old space. Keep us informed on how that works out.

I am so glad to hear about your nesting pair Lisa. I have heard the BB’s early in the AM on a few occasions in my huge Hemlock trees and saw one twice on electrical wires down the road from me. Our weather has been unusually warm but we got revisited by Old Man Winter again last night and have another fresh inch of white rain on the ground :Cough: . My BB’s houses are washed and ready and my DH built me a couple new ones over the winter, I am so pumped to get some nesting pairs but it is still a bit too early for that up this way. After my two years of bad luck I am so hoping this year will produce a pair that remains together through the whole fledging process.

No expert here by any stretch of the imagination, but my guess would be to let them nest. It seems they are determined to do that and if not at your BB house then somewhere else. Maybe someone else will advise you differently. but that is my two cents worth.

What a gorgeous picture of the BB. I hope you lucked out and they stayed around.

OH Susan that is so good to hear. I have heard a BB early in AM here in this area of PA but have not been able to put an eyeball on it. I have dried mealworms, maybe I ought to give that a try. About the ornaments, were they the only two they had or is it a possibility I might be able to get in touch with the store to see if they would mail me a couple? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Carol, I made my crumble and put it as a solid ball out in a dish yesterday, but nothing at all seems interested, even though the titmouse, chickadees, cardinals and nuthatches are going back and forth. I saw 7 BB’s yesterday on my walk, so they are hanging around here yet. Granted it has been warm in the 70’s today with rain. So maybe they do stay all year round.

Randy, I made the crumble and formed it into softball size balls and placed one in a glass dish in the center of my feeder but nothing seems interested in it. It is surrounded by black oilers cause that is what I have. Should I crumble it up or leave it as a solid mass? Yesterday while out for my walk I saw 7 BB’s so they are still around, just not here in my yard that I have seen. Are you using live or dried mealworms?

To be honest with you Carol, I am not sure if the BB’s stay here for the winter or not. I figured if they stay in NH, they might stay here too. Maybe I am wrong, I just started the BB love affair, with putting up a BB box two years ago, so I am new at all this. I would love if they stayed but I sort of figured if they don’t all the other birds will enjoy my efforts and if it helps them to survive the winter and give me the joy of watching them that would be great, but having the Blues would be the icing on the cake. Time will tell. I will let you know if I am successful.

                      Hi Randy:
I am glad to hear you have so many BB’s out your way. I got everything on hand to do the crumble so tomorrow I will give that a try. I only have one feeder, should I do something special with the crumble like put it in a separate feeder? I have a few live mealworms left and lots of dried ones, guess I will add that to the feeder separately. I do not have a special BB feeder.
I have not seen any BB the last couple days but did hear one singing early in the AM yesterday, so I hope this new to me venture works to keep them around for the winter.

Carol I intend to get the supplies when I shop this coming week. Can’t hurt to try but unlike you my BB’s do not come to my whistle, not even sure I will see any once I do this. I have seen them lately, they check out all the bird houses, then move on, so I just thought if I had some suet out they might just decide to stay. If they don’t care for it then I guess the other birds will feast for a while. Thanks for the info.

Wow Carol, that is a lot of mealworms. I can see why those BB’s are spoiled. I was just thinking yesterday I ought to try some suet. I remember reading about it here in a couple posts and I believe the recipe is on http://www.sialis.com. so I will have to check that out. Have fun watching those beauties.

So glad you asked that question Julie, I was wondering the same thing. A few weeks ago I saw a flock of BB’s down at the farm a mile away from here and it gave me such a good feeling. We had our first frost here last Sunday and Monday morning I saw a male BB hanging on the outside of the box just like they do in the Spring, he was around for a while and when I looked out on Tues. morning I did not see him, but I had a limited time to check, as we were headed to camp. Just came back today and was going to ask the same question. I was hoping I would see them around this winter, but like you Julie I am in PA and it does get cold and snowy, so maybe they do use the box if it gets cold enough. Just seeing one made my day.

It sure has been fun reading all the stories of the blues this year. Lisa, you should win top honors for the most nestlings this season. My hat is off to you.
My year was a bust, but I am not giving up, looking forward to next year already.
Hummingbirds are not as plentiful here as in other years, but I do have at least 8. I love watching them, they are so entertaining.
