Renee, that is sad news. I had wrens ruin eggs last season. They poked holes in 2 eggs the first attack, came back the next day and got the other 3 eggs. Grrrrr…..this happened with a wren guard put on after the first egg…..attack was on the 10th day of brooding! I cringe when I hear them. I try not to check on the boxes if I hear them singing in my area. As everyone on this site has said we can only do the best we can. I wish you the best.

Yay!!! Just like clockwork, I hope tomorrow brings number 4. The pictures you post are always so clear. Thank you for sharing.

Connie…..great news about your fledglings. I hope they start nest #2 soon. I keep putting out the dried mealworms, I see other birds eat them but never a bluebird. Maybe we just have so many yummy bugs they don’t want them. I’m sure the live mealworms would be much more appealing. Good luck.

David……keep the pictures coming, always a joy to see. Very good you haven’t seen any wrens they are such a pain!
My box where the mama blue would not accept the wren guard, ended up with only 2 eggs. The good news is they both hatched two days ago. I’m still trying to figure out why only 2 eggs, could it have been because of the sparrow spooker?

Excellent way to start the day……..it’s a beauty! Let’s hope for 5 more. Good luck.

Bob….male bluebird checking out your box sounds like a good start. I wish you luck and hope he returns with his lady. You must have been excited seeing him. My bluebird boxes have robins searching in grass around them often…..I doesn’t seem to be a problem.

David and Carol….cool you both are so lucky to have round 2 going. They didn’t waste any time starting the process all over again. I hope you get to see the fledglings helping out, that would be fun to watch. Happy birding!

Great news Dana, they will surely have much better nesting weather! It is a joy to have them around the yard, sitting on top of taller things, looking for bugs. Best wishes to you.

David not sure if she is incubating. She has been around more the past 2 days. She does go in the box for awhile, then I’ll see her poke her head through the hole looking out, blocking the hole. She will stay like that 5-10 minutes. Papa blue has been around too.
My front yard blue mama is seldom seen and papa blue is on look-out. Back-yard pair are very different in behavior.

David….I got a real chuckle out of your last post. I think this bluebirding is turning me into the crazy bird-lady! LOL

Tammy, that had to be a nightmare! Lucky you had a sticky note with you. Wishing you good luck.

Gin…that explains why they are gone most of the day. Unattended nest is very dangerous in my area. So far so good.
Update….one egg, put up wren guard…second day, no egg, took wren guard off, third day, egg #2, put up spooker, they both would enter bb box, so I assume it was accepted..day four, no egg, still see them come and go. Today, day five, no egg, still coming and going. One of the no egg days was super cold and rainy. I really expected another egg today. Thoughts….have any of you experienced this type of pattern? Anyone had mama blue lay an egg late afternoon or evening?

Connie, there are a few different ways to do paired boxes. Mine are on separate poles about 15 feet apart. The front-yard boxes face south/east and the back-yard boxes face north/east. I chose the direction that would work for the bluebirds, but I needed to be able to view the entrances to the boxes from inside my house. It’s working perfectly. The front boxes and back boxes are about 120 yards (football field) apart with the house in the center. Last year I had TRES and BB in the back boxes. There was a BB nest in the front also, but a nasty wren got in and ruined all the eggs. They are a big worry around here.
That’s excellent you guys are handy and it sounds like they turn out nice! The price is definitely right. Guess I lack talent in that area.
Carol….My Hubby was born in Butler, MO, he and his family moved to MI many moons ago. Do you know where it is? Just curious.

Countrygirl, things are looking up! I’m happy to hear the TRES are building. We still have cold rainy weather, but all the trees and plants are looking wonderful. The past few days we have had a scarlet tanager coming to eat the oriole’s grape jelly. We’ve not seen one before…..he is such a beautiful red. Do you get them in Ontario? Good luck!
