Thanks Judy, the same to you.
ConnieJudy, you did real good. I never had or saw TRES in my yard. I do believe they are up the road by the farm, but I have never had them at my BB box. Maybe some yeAr.
ConnieFabulous pictures David. I too like the darkened background. I have seen papa bring in some big grubs here too, maybe it is the wet weather that has plumped them up.
ConnieHi Judy:
Well I took the nest out and carefully moved each baby blue to find the unhatched egg and it was not there. Also moved the feeder and mama was having a fit, not that I blame her. We left to take a ride and when we got back about 4 hours later there were two ground sparrows eating the mealworms. I did not see Mama or Papa Blue and I thought my meddling and the feeder might have frightened them so bad they left. Then Papa showed up and was feeding the little ones and the sparrow scared him off, so my husband removed the feeder entirely. They will either have to learn how to use the new mealworm feeder in the back or fend for themselves. The pair I had where the female kept seeing herself in the windows earlier this season knew how to use the feeder but these two seem oblivious. That is the reason I keep thinking it is a different pair. Who knows.
ConnieHi Dana:
Four of my five eggs hatched this past Tuesday, so today I am going to try to retrieve the unhatched one and dispose of it.
I don’t understand this pair of BB’s, I have placed a bowl of mealworms in several different areas and they ignore them completely. I am going try to move it in front of the box and if that doesn’t work I am giving up. Both parents are working like crazy to keep the little ones fed. There definitely are not a lot of BB’s this year, so the weather or something has disrupted them.
I just had a flock of Cedar Waxwings land in my dogwood tree and eat part of the flowers then they went on their way.
I have several pairs of Orioles that come to feed, but my second BB house is empty.
I do hope you get some blues to nest in your box this year. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
ConnieThe pictures are wonderful David. My little ones should hatch next week. My mama seems to be more flighty than she was earlier, I try not to disturb her but even my car coming in makes her take flight which didn’t bother her a week ago. I hope all 5 eggs 🐣 hatch but only time will tell. Keep the pictures coming.
ConnieThanks Dana. How are things going at your house.
ConnieThanks David.
ConnieThanks Judy. I figured the last egg was laid on May 1, so the-hatch should be around the 14th or 15th, but like David said there is no rule book. I will keep an eye on things. Hope things get started for you soon.
ConnieCongrats David, what a wonderful sight to see 4 new baby blues.
ConnieHi Carol:
Thanks, I am happy for you too. Now I have to sit down and try to figure out when the hatch should take place.
I did put two Hummingbird feeders out, but a limited amount of food in each. I am happy to see them back again, along with the Oriole. The Orchard one is the only one I have seen so far, no Baltimore’s yet.
ConnieHi Phillyblues:
I never thought I would have any Orioles either, but I kept seeing them year after year. Finally I purchased an Oriole feeder and by gosh they actually came to feed. I never did the jelly because of the ant factor, and I do keep a water moat that my husband makes hung above it all the time, so no ant issues with it. I tried an orange one year, that did nothing. LOL
ConnieThanks David.
Hi Judy:
I did have the second egg yesterday but I did not open the box, it was so chilly and windy. I just assumed that when I saw egg #3 mid morning today. I do believe she has started incubating them as I see her in the box with her beak or whole head protruding from the hole. I was hoping there would be a clutch of 5 or 6 but I am thrilled to have what I have.
We avoided the snow, but at 6:00 AM today there was frost on most surfaces and
27 degrees🙁. I have no way of knowing if the two eggs will make it or not but in a few weeks I will know for sure.
Keep good thoughts for a new male
and give those nasty
a run for their lives.
