Hi dlibby:
I think the blues are more scarce in our area (western PA) this year. I do have a nesting pair and had either one set or two sets checking out my front yard box, but they did not stay around. I know I used to see them on the fence and electrical wires down the road at the farm, but nothing except earlier in the year and absolutely nothing now.
Our weather has been very odd this year. Lots or rain 2.4 inches yesterday alone and more coming, plus cool temps. Don’t give up hope, if you don’t have a set this year, I am sure you will get one next season. I know how you feel I fretted over not getting any this year, but it all worked out, later than the last two years but better late than never.
Connie (PA)Hi Judy:
Just wanted to say I am sorry you lost all the eggs in the nest. Wish I could supply you with a simple solution, but I don’t have any.
They say take the old nest out as soon as they fledge and I imagine you would do the same with the eggs gone, but that is only a guess. I have only been doing the bluebird boxes for 3 seasons now and I am a fledgling myself.
I am so glad you have a new or the same set of blues building another nest. That is great news. I hope the HOWR leave them alone this time.
Connie (PA)Checked the nest again about 1/2 hour ago after I saw Mama fly out, and to my great surprise there are now 6 eggs in the nest and I believe the incubation part has now begun.
I am just
happy.

Sassy.
Keep us informed on the progress David. Here you are on the second nesting and I am still on the first. I think weather is the main reason for the delay here. Today’s high was 67 degrees.
Connie (PA)Great news David. Super picture of your BB pair, and I know they built here during the rain. That does not seem to hamper their instincts.
I saw a new pair of Blues at my other house this AM. Let me tell you it was excitement overload. I hope they decide to come back as the pair I have in the my back yard house did. That pair has 3 eggs as of noon today and my mealworms are on order.
I am going to keep a close eye on the front house tomorrow to see if the new pair returns.
Connie (PA)Checked the nest a little while ago, so far 2 eggs, so I am guessing one on Sat. and one today since there was nothing in there Friday afternoon.

Oh Cari, what an exciting thing to witness. I did see one of my babies fledge the first year I had blues, but we were leaving for our camp for a picnic which I was hosting so never saw anything except one baby fly out and land on the side of our house. Last year Mama disappeared and Papa too when the two that were left were about to fledge, so all was lost. I am hoping this year I get to witness exactly what you have today.
Connie (PA)Thanks Carol, I will let you know once I check. I hope there is one or maybe two by the time I get out there.
Connie (PA)Thanks to you also Randy, I hope they reward me too. I had such bad luck the last two years, with Mama BB disappearing. I hope that does not happen again. I just saw Mama fly out of the box, so maybe there is an egg in there now. I will check later today or tomorrow.
Connie (PA)Thanks David, I am keeping an eye peeled for trouble. Hope you enjoy the day too.
Connie (PA)I wish they were too Tammy, but unfortunately they are not. I will keep my eye out to see if they return, but I definitely will not hold my breath after hearing the HOWR.
Connie (PA)I hope it was just the weather but this morning when I went out to get the paper around 7:30 AM there was a #$*$ HOWR singing his lungs out somewhere in the near vicinity. I thought I had gotten rid of him since I had not seen or heard from him in days. Guess I was wrong.
Congrats Carol, that is great news. I could not see the picture. I did right click it but there is no open in new tab option.
Connie (PA)Randy I have to write to let you know you were right about it being early in the season and lots of baseballs to play yet. Yesterday I noticed a pair of BB’s at my front yard bluebird box then later they were at the back yard box. They disappeared for a while but he came back a few times, then nothing again till today, and I do believe the nest building has started. The only strange thing I notice is he seems to be in and out of the box time after time, more really than she is. It is interesting to watch and I am beyond thrilled.
Thanks everyone that told me to hang in there. It is paying off royally.
Connie (PA)Such wonderful news Dana. Congrats on the second nest building.
